On your three-day desert excursion from Marrakech to Fes, depart in the morning at 8:30 from your riad or hotel in Marrakech and go south. As you traverse the high Atlas Mountains, you are treated to panoramic views of striking topography, charming Berber towns, and snow-capped mountain peaks.
A side road goes to Kasbah Telouet, which was formerly the opulent home of the Glaoui Family, the Lords of the Atlas, after the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. After the last Pasha left Morocco in 1956 when the French left, the Kasbah is now in ruins. But prepare to be delighted by this old home’s architectural wonder.
From here, your three-day desert travel from Marrakech to Fes continues via the enthralling Ounila Valley, which is home to picturesque Berber settlements, walled Kasbahs, and winding roadways. You travel to the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou and explore it following lunch. In addition to being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has served as the setting for several Hollywood movies, such as “Alexander,” “Gladiator,” and a few scenes from the hit television series “Game of Thrones.”
We travel to the Skoura Oasis in the afternoon, stopping along the way to see the Kasbah Amredhil, which was formerly shown on the 50 dirham bill. The wonderfully restored Kasbah is well worth a visit.
From here, you go to Kel’aa M’gouna along the beautiful Valley of the Roses and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. You can visit a local cooperative that produces cosmetic items from the valley’s plentiful flowers here.
You will reach the Dades Gorges by the end of the day, where you will spend the night in a guest house with a view of the valley and breakfast in the morning.
You continue on southeast on your excursion after breakfast. There are many of options to hike along the road on the opposite side of the gorges or alongside the river through the gardens in Toudgha Gorges. You may eat lunch in Erfoud later on, or right here in the gorges. You can pause to descend into “Khettara,” a wonderful underground water conduit that is located deep below the earth, constantly cold, and keeps water from evaporating, between Tinjdad and Erfoud.
You may visit the neighborhood workshop in Erfoud itself to look at how thousands of fossils are transformed into a variety of artifacts. The workshops are well worth a visit, but there’s no pressure to buy anything! From this point on, you drive further east to Merzouga, where the start of the vast Sahara Desert can be seen by sand dunes along the road.
You relax into your tent at the campsite and nosh on some Moroccan pastries and a soothing drink of tea. After that, you ride a camel to the 250-meter crest of the Erg Chebbi dunes. From the top of the dunes, you will enjoy the sunset!
Dinner is provided back at the camp, and then there’s an evening around a campfire with nomad music and drumming. You spend the night in your tent, which has a king-sized bed, mattresses, linens, cushions, blankets, and rugs, as well as lovely Moroccan furniture that have been thoughtfully placed to improve your stay. It also has a private bathroom and shower.
The wonderful beauty of the dawn, when the color dunes and the movement of shadows are an incredible sight, awaits those who rise early in the morning. Additionally, you will get some free time to explore the dunes and find quiet moments.
Take a picturesque drive across Erg Chebbi’s sand dunes after breakfast. Returning to the paved road, you follow the Ziz valley, which is notable for the size of its green oasis and enormous palm groves, all the way up north to Errachidia. We’ll have lunch in Midelt, sometimes known as “the apple capital,” which is tucked away at the base of Ayachi Mountain.
In the afternoon, you drive via the Tizi-n-Talremt pass and across the Middle Atlas Mountains. You drive to Azrou, where you encounter Barbary apes watching for food scraps, by way of a lovely route surrounded by cedar and green oak trees.
From this point on, you traverse Ifrane, where the homes feature very steep roofs, which is quite noteworthy in Morocco. We get at Fes late in the afternoon. As your driver drops you off at your Fes riad or hotel.
